Michelle McCullough is an employed Michigander, but does not have health insurance. Michelles young daughter, Layonna, has nephritic syndrome. In June 2002, Layonna was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. She has received joint care of the Hematology/Oncology and Nephrology services at Childrens Hospital of Michigan. In July of 2002, Layonna began receiving chemotherapy for the final phases of her Hodgkins lymphoma. This disease has resulted in years of treatment and periodic hospitalizations requiring Michelles attendance and support. As Michelle is a single parent, the cost mentally and financially of her daughters illness has put an enormous strain on the family. She has received support from friends and family for her own medical bills and has used MIChild for support for Layonna. Because she lacks insurance, Michelle has been forced to rely on smaller clinics, such as those at CVS or Wal-Mart to receive medical care and antibiotics.During Congressman Dingells healthcare hearing in Romulus, Michigan, she shared her story.
