MEDICAID FACTS
http://www.healthylearners.comHealthy Learners, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, is dedicated to improving the health and well being of school children from economically disadvantaged families in an effort to improve their quality of life. Healthy Learners is a school linked program that addresses focusing on the "whole health" of the child with the belief that physical, psychological and emotional well being are all a part of high academic achievement. South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Inez Tenenbaum affirmed this belief when she stated, "A study conducted found that there is a missing key in southern school districts; there is not enough focus on the "whole health" of a child when considering his or her academic performance." As we care for our community"s children, we must consider the "whole child" and how unmet health needs affect their academic performance and potential. Healthy Learners seeks to remove these health barriers to learning and to meet the health needs of South Carolina school children. The purpose of Healthy Learners is, and always has been, to meet the health needs of children and youth who would otherwise not receive adequate access to health care services. These children are from families who have no means of funding for health care; they are uninsured or underinsured and do not have private pay capability. Believing that children learn better when they are healthy, a group of committed community citizens led by Al Pollard established Healthy Learners, formerly Health Reach, in 1992 to help alleviate health related barriers to learning that face our community's economically disadvantaged children. Since its inception, more than 30,000 children have been touched by Healthy Learners' services. The program began by offering services to five Columbia inner city elementary schools but over the years, the Midlands program experienced tremendous growth. The dream of replication of the Healthy Learners model and statewide expansion of the program became reality in the fall of 2005 as 3 new programs opened in different regions of the state; one in Allendale (Lowcountry), one in Dillon (PeeDee) and one in Greenwood (Upstate). Currently the four Healthy Learners programs serve 109 schools in seven school districts across South Carolina.Healthy Learners is dedicated to improving the overall health and well being of economically disadvantaged school children through education, prevention, and intervention services. Effective community partnerships allow Healthy Learners to respond to children in need while furthering the mission, ministry and purpose of the Sisters of Charity Health System.

The growth of media has had an ever-expanding role in the lives of children, especially in terms of a child's physical and mental health. Here, Michael Rich, MD, MPH, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, comments on media as a force that powerfully affects child development, health, and behavior. Paying particular attention to TV, movies, music, and video games, Rich offers perspective on common concerns over media and suggests ways to avoid the media's negative effects.

Kaboose Prepares Parents for Countdown to Kindergarten A few simple tips help getting ready for school a little easier Nearly four million children will start kindergarten in the U.S. this fall. The transition to "real school" can be both an exciting and scary time for kids and their parents, but there are a number of things parents can do to make the transition easier. Kaboose (TSX: KAB) has teamed up with Suelain Moy, parenting expert and frequent contributor to Kaboose, and Dr. David Nelson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Georgetown University Hospital, to offer advice to parents as they and their kindergarteners-to-be get ready for the big day."There are few milestones in a child's life more memorable or poignant than the first day of kindergarten, but it also can be a stressful time for parents and children," said Ms. Moy. "At Kaboose, with our team of experts, we have the information, activities and tools to help parents support their child's learning at school on the first exhilarating day and every day thereafter."Experts at Kaboose also alert parents to considerations regarding the first day of school that may not have even come to mind. For example, a trip to the doctor is a good idea before starting the school year."Most states require that children get certain vaccines before they can start school," said Dr. Nelson. "Parents can help make the process easier by being aware of the school's immunization requirements and asking the child's doctor about combination vaccines that can reduce the number of shots a child receives in a single visit."On Kaboose.com parents can find several quick and easy tips to help the first day go smoothly, including:• Set regular routines before the school year begins. Keep them easy-to-do. It can be as simple as having a regular bath time or reading time, picking out the next day's outfit the night before, or having dinner together;• Practice basic skills and lessons at home. Simple things like painting, learning how to write their name, tying shoelaces, and taking care of their belongings can give your child confidence in school;• Organize all of your child's important documents: school calendars, medical forms, immunization records and emergency contact information;• Take your child to the doctor for a check-up before school starts. Several vaccinations may be required for school entry. Ask about fewer shots with combination vaccines as a way to help make meeting school-entry requirements easier;• Make sure the school has your most current emergency contact information. Be sure to include more than one number on the list, as well as a trusted neighbor or friend as a back-up contact;• Share your child's health history, including allergies or learning disabilities, with the school nurse; and• Do a "rehearsal" with your child before the first day so they understand where the school is and how they will be getting there and back.Parents can visit www.Kaboose.com for even more information about getting children off to a positive and healthy start to their scholastic careers and to explore fun and educational ways to connect parents and kids.About Kaboose Inc.Kaboose is one of the largest family-focused new media companies in the world and one of the top-five most visited family destinations online. This Video *MAY TRIGGER* ======================This is a video on self-harm I made to help those who don't understand. Please check it out and ask any questions if you have any. If there is hate comments, rude or disrespectful I will delete and block you. Below I have posted a lil more details about those who self-harm. Please take a moment to read it.http://www.recoveryourlife.com/http://www.meetup.com/http://www.psyke.org======================Song: Breathe-Sia======================SI is something I go through personally everyday of my life. I think about it all the time. Even tho the thoughts are there, most likely I'll be able to control myself & not hurt my body. Sometimes I slip & hurt myself but it shows how hard I work towards being heathly & safe. DBT is a good source to help the urges & to find safe ways to cope with the feeling.======================Self-injury or self-harm is when somebody damages or injures their body on purpose. Self-injury is a way of expressing deep emotional feelings or problems that build up inside.Cutting the skin is probably the most common form of self-injury. The cuts are not usually deep but in some cases, medical attention is needed to clean, dress or stitch the wounds. The most common places on the body to cut are the wrists, upper arms, inner thighs and upper chest. Less common are the face, breasts, abdomen and genitals. Often people who cut themselves will use one or two methods, for example, knives, glass or razor blades. The person tends to have a certain area of the body that they prefer to cut, such as the arms.Burning the skin (usually with cigarettes) is also common. People may also self-harm by scratching, hitting or punching, sometimes using an object. Other forms of self-injury include picking at the skin, pulling out hair, swallowing poisonous substances, taking an overdose of tablets or drugs or deliberately breaking bones.Although, there is a connection between self-harm and suicide, the majority do not risk their lives. For many people who self-injure, their actions are only an attempt to cope with the stress and difficulties they face; their purpose is not to end their life. However, there is a possibility that those who self-injure may commit suicide either deliberately or accidentally as the result of their actions.Self-harm is much more common among girls than boys, often starting in adolescence (between 13 and 18 years of age), although it can affect children from as young as 11 years. Fear of discovery, shame and embarrassment often means that people keep self-injury a secret. Because of this, it is difficult to know how many people self-harm.Some people self-harm only once or a few times while others do it on a regular basis, sometimes throughout their life.People who self-injure are very careful to hide the damage and scars. They will often injure themselves in places that can be easily hidden by clothing so friends and family members may be unaware of the person self-injuring in private.Another sign that someone could be self-harming is that the person will insist on keeping covered up at all times, even in hot weather.People self-injure for a variety of reasons and sometimes, the person doesnt actually know why they are doing it. However, it is commonly thought to provide a release for pent-up emotions and feelings. For some people it is their way of coping with a specific problem. Self-injury is a sign of emotional distress and is not an attempt to seek attention.People who self-harm often describe feelings of numbness or deadness or they may feel detached from reality, as if they are not part of the world. Some may injure themselves to stay separated from reality but others do it to make them feel more real, connected and alive.People who self-harm often describe feelings of numbness or deadness or they may feel detached from reality, as if they are not part of the world. Some may injure themselves to stay separated from reality but others do it to make them feel more real, connected and alive.People who self-injure risk infections if their wounds are not treated properly. Portune Proposes Joint City-County Infant Mortality Reduction Office & Review Team (May 27, 2008) -- Calling for a "new, focused initiative to lower our infant mortality rate," Hamilton County Commission president Todd Portune will formally introduce a resolution on Wednesday to create a joint City-County Office of Maternal and Infant Health and Infant Mortality Reduction. The goal of the initiative is to reduce Hamilton County's infant mortality rate to below the national average within 5 years."We have never before had city and county political leadership and city and county Health Boards come together around the issue with this kind of commitment to get something done," Portune said. Mayor Mark Mallory and Council Member Jeff Berding have led the effort for the joint collaboration with the City. It is anticipated that the city through either Council Member Berding or Mayor Mallory or both will formally introduce a companion resolution on Wednesday.Portune organized an Infant Mortality Summit in October 2007, which found that despite millions of dollars spent to address the infant mortality condition in Hamilton County, mortality rates remain inordinately high and have gotten worse. Infant deaths account for more than 50 percent of the deaths of all children ages 0-17 in Hamilton County.Infant Mortality rates in Hamilton County exceed the national average by almost 30 percent. The Infant mortality rate for African American and Appalachian ethnicities is three times the national average. Infant morality is defined as child deaths in the first year of life. About the Office of Maternal and Infant Health and Infant MortalityThe new Office of Maternal and Infant Health and Infant Mortality for Cincinnati and Hamilton County will be administered by a Board consisting of ten individuals to be appointed, five by the Hamilton County Commissioners and five by the Mayor Cincinnati upon the advice and consent of the Cincinnati City Council. In addition, under the Hamilton County Family and Children First Council, a sub-committee of the Child Fatality Review Team was re-instated to collect data pertaining to infant mortality.

Part 3 of 4 explores some of the potential solutions to the problems facing society. The video segments 1 to 4 are part of a documentary written and directed by Anatole Kononewsky. Anatole was Senior Research Officer at the Australian Institute of Criminology. The original documentary was produced in Australia and launched in March 1993. It was produced for the project, "Before its Too Late". Robert Kiyosaki and Max Walker were the national spokesmen for the video launch. . The video was used, with a handbook, by schools around Australia. Although produced back in 1993, the documentary raises issues and problems that are still relevant to all of us and shows some of their potential solutions. It also examines the futility of the current prison and criminal justice system. It is a compassionate examination of the challenges that modern society is currently presenting to young people and portrays an understanding of the dilemmas they face. The documentary looks at the problems from a personal, social and ethical level, seeking to empower the viewer with the attitude necessary to find solutions. It is pertinent to young people experiencing difficulty with authority, achieving, parental relationships, or any other socially alienating attitude. The "Before it's Too Late" project supported a selected number of youth groups in Australia. The project was completed in 1996 when it donated all of its surplus funds to the Lighthouse Foundation Ltd (a project based in Melbourne helping homeless youth at risk).Comments on the Video & the Project: "Before it's too Late" "Congratulations, the video is spectacular."Robert Kiyosaki, International best selling author. When the highest priority of our families, communities, schools, government and business is to ensure all of our children are raised to feel safe, secure and serene then we will begin to create more peaceful people. And with more peaceful people we will have a more peaceful world. The song is linked to another initiative created and song written by Anatole Kononewsky, "See the world in you".
